Since 1987, the Foundation for Student Housing in Zurich

The Foundation

Zurich is one of the most renowned university locations in Switzerland and internationally. More than 70,000 students are enrolled at Zurich's universities and universities of applied sciences, and only around 11% of them live in student halls of residence. For many years now there has been a severe shortage of affordable housing for many years. Since its foundation in 1987, the the SSWZ Foundation has been explicitly committed to this target group. In the meantime, it offers housing for almost 2,000 enrolled students in four districts of Zurich.

Our philosophy

Affordable housing for students is essential for the attractiveness and competitiveness of Zurich as a university location. There is still only affordable housing in Zurich for around 2/3 of the students who need a room. There is a shortage of thousands of places to live!

Mission

We strive for more. More affordable housing for students in the city of Zurich, more sustainable housing and building quality, more flexibility and more satisfied students.

Housing quality = study quality

Studying at the universities in Zurich is extremely demanding. Success only comes to those who find space for concentration, recreation, exchange and balance. The SSWZ offers the necessary infrastructure for these needs.

Non-profit status

As a non-profit foundation, the SSWZ performs tasks in the general interest. The focus is on achieving the foundation's purpose, namely the provision of affordable housing for students in Zurich. The activities of the SSWZ sustainably strengthen Zurich as a university location. All the properties in the real estate portfolio are maintained are maintained with the utmost care and are thus preserved inalienably for future generations of students.

Sustainability

SSWZ strives to play its part in all three pillars of sustainability (ecological, economic and social). Construction projects are built to the highest quality standards, barrier-free and with a focus on sustainability and the entire life cycle of the property. The range of rooms is accessible to all students in the city of Zurich. Where possible, SSWZ also offers space for local businesses and children's uses. This tenant mix contributes to social diversity and enrichment of the city's neighbourhoods.

Administration and management

WOKO (Student Housing Cooperative) is the organisation commissioned by the SSWZ to manage all properties. It has specialised in the management and administration of student housing for more than 60 years.
